Record and Document Community History (AHCILM404) Course
The Record and Document Community History Course is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is invested professionally and or personally in recording and documenting the stories that our communities are built on. This 2-day event will provide you with the rich skills and knowledge, theory and practice, to research, prepare and record an oral history project.

Presenter
The nationally accredited oral history training will be delivered over two days by Dr Elaine Rabbitt. Elaine has developed the oral history training package for AHCILM404 Record and document Community History, drawn from the wealth of oral history teaching materials that are available in Australia and overseas.
She is the training manager at Goolarri Media Enterprises based in Broome Western Australia. She trains and mentors radio broadcasters, both paid workers and volunteers, writes curriculum and lecture when required, and is responsible for managing the organisations trainers.
Elaine is also involved in oral history training and recording. She has recorded and continues to record the stories of people from all walks of life. She has worked on numerous oral history projects Australia wide.

Workshop Content
Workshop One – 6 hours
- Introduction to Oral History and getting started
- What is oral history?
- Guidelines for ethical practice: writing an invitation to participate and informed consent
- Preparing for the interview: interview techniques and questions,
- Cultural protocols
Workshop Two – 6 hours
- Recording stories and how to use a professional recorder
- Practice recording: interviewing each other
- Concluding the interview
- After the interview – reflections, storing the interview and uses
- Summaries, transcriptions
Practical tasks to be completed to gain the qualification include:
- Complete assessment workbook containing activities including answering questions re ethical practice.
- Learn how to write a letter of invitation and informed consent to suit your project.
- Use professional recording equipment
- Complete an interview.
- Keep a reflective journal to evaluate the interview context.
Each student will be given individual feedback on their interview.
Outcome
Those who complete the workshop, an interview and their assessment workbook, will be awarded their certificate issued by the Community Media Training Organisation (CMTO) RTO ID: 91800. Your certificate will be recognised nation-wide under the Australian Quality Framework.
Payment and Cancellation Policy
Once you complete the following form you will receive an email confirmation of your registration and within 2 – 3 days a tax invoice will be mailed to you.
As per the CMTOs Refund Policy and Procedure, a full refund will be made if the CMTO is notified of cancellation in writing at least 14 days prior to the workshop. No refund is available for cancellations made within 14 days of the workshop commencing.
