Emergency Preparedness is a one day, 6 hr pathways course delivered in person at your station. The CMTO has developed this course in response to the many conversations we have had with stations who have been directly and indirectly impacted by the bushfires and floods we experienced last year and earlier this year.
Through this course, learners will gain skills and knowledge in:
- Auditing existing emergency broadcast assets and resources
- Engaging and activating station and emergency networks
- Planning, preparing, delivering and auditing an emergency broadcast
For the delivery of the training, your station will be provided with an experienced trainer, student resources, a Station Host Fee payable to the station to cover the cost of running the training and an opportunity for a group of your volunteers to better understand Emergency Broadcasting.
We recently piloted this course with NSW North Coast station, 2BOB Radio. Here is their feedback on the course:
“This course should be on everyone’s list of essential training courses. 2BOB Radio conducted the pilot of this course in August with Trainer Martin Corben. The area was hit hard by last year’s bushfires with loss of life and extensive property damage. We thought 2BOB Radio responded well with repeated warnings and updates to our listeners about the progress of the various fire fronts but after taking this course we have realised we could have done so much better. We now have a list of emergency preparedness broadcasters from among our volunteers and have established contact with the media liaison officers of all the first responder organisations in our area. We now realise the importance of providing accurate and timely information to our listeners. We will be much better prepared for the next emergency – Andy Colvin 2BOB Radio”
We are calling on community radio managers and board to promote this opportunity throughout their stations and engage broadcasters and volunteers to sign up for this free one day course.
Please note- CMTO Pathways courses do not lead to an NRT AQF certification.
