Community media leaders from across Australia are expanding their knowledge and skills in fundraising and management through CMTO’s THINK BIG CUASS00099 Community Broadcasting Marketing Skill Set.

This accredited management course is specifically designed to meet the needs of leaders in the community media sector.

At the beginning of August, 9 representatives from Youth, First Nations, Christian, regional, and metro stations, came together in Sydney for a three-day Leadership & Enterprise Workshop at 107 Projects, Redfern.

Participants completed a range of learning and assessment activities on topics including presentation and promotions; fundraising strategies; sponsorship; grant writing; and volunteer management.

Overwhelmingly, participants valued the opportunity to connect and learn from each other, with many commenting that although there were very different station profiles, they shared similar challenges and opportunities.

When asked what their main learning takeaway had been, the group agreed that there are “so many ways to do community radio” and “so many ways to fundraise”.

“I came away inspired” - workshop participant

The course is designed for staff and volunteers who are active members of a station and provides an opportunity to consolidate and develop the on-the-job skills involved in running community media organisations.

Delivered online over 21 weeks, small teams are working with industry mentors to complete a series of assessment tasks based on two major projects - a sponsorship campaign and a new income idea.

The current cohort involves participants from the following stations:

  • 2CHY 104.1 CHYfm Coffs Harbour;
  • 3BGR Good News Radio Ballarat;
  • 3TSC 89.9 The Light Melbourne;
  • 4TTT Triple T Radio Townsville;
  • 4GCR 91.5 Gympie Christian Radio;
  • 5DDD ThreeD Radio Adelaide;
  • 5FBI Fresh 92.7, Adelaide;
  • 6DBY 96.9fm Larrkardi Radio - Derby Media Association;
  • 8CCC 102fm Alice Springs & Tennant Creek.

Current participants will continue their learning through the coming months, if you are interested in taking up an opportunity like this in the future, the CMTO will be accepting applications for this course again in 2024.
